Geraldine W. Gibson

May 25, 1927 — December 23, 2019

Geraldine "Jerry" Ruth Walker Poole Gibson died peacefully at home on Monday, December 23, 2019 in Ellijay, Gilmer County at the age of 92. She was born May 25, 1927 in Canton, Stark Co., Ohio and was the only child of her parents, Ervin "Pat" Lester Walker (June 21,1904 - April 9, 1988) and Beatrice Lavelle King Walker (September 29, 1907 - March 31, 1990). Jerry spent her early life traveling with her parents as her father worked on various dams during the Great Depression. She fondly remembers living in Epworth, GA near her paternal grandparents Alonzo and Ella (Little) Walker. Her maternal grandparents William Lee and Nancy (Fulton) King were just over the border in Polk, TN. She went to 17 different schools during her 12 years of public school and graduated in Georgia from Marietta High School. In 1945, she went to Salisbury, NC to attend nursing school at Rowan Memorial Hospital. It was there that she met the love of her life, Joseph William Poole, Jr. who was born April 4, 1921 in Salisbury, NC. They were married in Salisbury, NC on October 8, 1948. To this union were born two children, Patrick "Pat" Ervin Poole on March 8, 1950 and Rebekah "Becky" Cora Poole on September 2, 1953. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joe on April 9, 1966 and her daughter on June 27, 2006. After Joe's death, Jerry moved her family to Georgia to be close to her parents. She worked as a nurse at various hospitals in the area. On August 14, 1971, her son Pat married Ann Marie Bogguss who became her loving "daughter." She then ventured into the wholesale nursery business with Edgar "Ed" J. Gibson. They opened up The Bush Farm in 1974 and ran it together successfully until 1996. On September 23, 1976 Jerry and Ed were married and brought to Jerry her "other" loving daughter, Ann Eubanks. Ed preceded her in death on December 2, 1993. Jerry was a skilled artisan throughout her life. She began by tatting with her mother and teaching cub scouts how to make things such as bird houses and bird feeders. She enjoyed making ceramics with her daughter-in-law, Ann. Then Jerry moved on to decoupage, macram, and crochet. Many will remember her crocheted hats made from store plastic bags. Jerry also made memory shadow boxes using dried flowers, and other items. The last 20 years were devoted to quilting. She was a member of Helpful Friends, Timeless Stichers Quilt Guilds. When she moved to Ellijay, she joined the Apple Country Quilt Guild. Jerry was a very patriotic woman who lived through WWII. Joe had served in the Army and fought in Germany. Jerry was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) under Patriot Peter Little. Jerry first joined the Andrew McBride Chapter in McDonough, GA and then the Captain James Kell Chapter in Ellijay. Jerry will be remembered for her faith in God, her service to others, and her wonderful sense of humor. And of course, who will forget her beautiful mixed socks. Survivors include her son Patrick E. Poole (Ann) of Ellijay, GA; grandson Jason K. Poole (Jeri), great-grandchildren Zolan, I'ason, Baelin, Aveon, Kilean of Buford, GA; grandson Joseph W. Poole, great-grandson Enzo of McDonough, GA. Ann Eubanks, Jay Eubanks, Danny Eubanks, Nathan and Nicole Eubanks all of Senoia, GA. Jerry will be interred January 8, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Historical Salisbury National Cemetery, NC. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved Joe Poole, her first husband and father of her children. A drop-in gathering to celebrate her life will be held in Ellijay, GA on January 15, 2020 from 1:00 PM until 3:00PM at the home of Pat and Ann Poole. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Compassus Hospice 583 Highland Crossing S Suite 120, Ellijay, GA 30540.
