1937 Judith 2017

Judith Myers

February 1, 1937 — October 11, 2017

Judith (Judy) Abbott Myers, age 80, of Woodstock and Clayton, GA passed away surrounded by family and friends on October 11, 2017. Judy was born on February 1, 1937 in Whitman, Mass, and grew up in Forest Hills, NY, where she accompanied her father on rent-collecting rounds to his apartments as a child and spent summers on the beach in Amagansett, Long Island, NY. She would grow up to share her love of the city and her beloved beachside Amagansett with her family and children their whole lives. She received a degree in Classics from Brown University and later attended Goucher College (1958) where she earned her Master's in Education and made many life-long friends. While at Brown, Judy went on a blind date arranged by her roommate Janet Hall and met dashing Dartmouth student Dirck VanBuren Myers. They were married on August 24, 1959, celebrated at the Westside Tennis Club, and spent 58 fabulous years together traveling the globe, raising three daughters and making fast friends in the many places they called home - Atlanta, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Clayton (GA), Kure Beach (NC), and Woodstock (GA). Their adventure started with a move to Seattle, WA where their first daughter, Deborah, was born and Dirck completed his PhD at the University of Washington. The family then moved back to the Northeast, settling in Massachusetts Jennifer was born and Dirck studied at Harvard until 1965. Next, on to New Jersey, where they welcomed their third daughter, Amy, and a beloved Golden Retriever, Golden Sedge of Barnegat's Bay, to their entourage. In 1968, Judy and Dirck headed south to Atlanta, where they raised all three of their girls and she became a formidable competitor on the Buckhead and Sandy Springs tennis circuits. Among her favorite pastimes was spending time at their home at Lake Burton and in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia where friends were always welcome, and the family celebrated many milestones together. Dirck and Judy also enjoyed living in Kure Beach, NC. Always by their side were their four-legged companions, most recently Harry and Nike. Where ever she called home, Judy was always active in the community, volunteering her time with Habitat for Humanity. An avid reader, she loved her Woodstock, GA Book Club, passing along book selections to her husband and daughters. She was indeed, as the longstanding, magnetic fixture on the lakehouse refrigerator proclaims, a "Super Kid," and a fabulous wife and mother in all respects; she is dearly missed, greatly loved, and lovingly remembered. Judy is survived by her husband, three daughters and five grandchildren, Avery and Chloe Waclawski, Lauryn Bachmann, and Taylor and Lilly Stone. A Memorial Service in her honor will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Clayton, GA on Saturday, November 18th at 2:00 p.m. Saint James Episcopal Church, 260 Warwoman Rd, Clayton, GA 30525; 706-782-6179.
