James Hoyt Leamon, Jr

Mr. James Hoyt Leamon, Jr. of Marietta, GA. passed away Monday, January 30, 2023, following an extended illness.  He was 74 years old.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Poole Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Pope officiating.  Burial will be at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Georgia National Cemetery with full military honors. If you would to be a part of the processional to Georgia National Cemetery, please arrive at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Association at http://www.alz.org/ or to the Military Ministry at First Baptist Church Woodstock at https://www.cherokeeveteranscommunity.org/donations

Mr. Leamon was born on February 4, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late James Hoyt Leamon, Sr. and Wilma Johnson Leamon.  He graduated Dykes High School Class of 1966 where he was a member of the football team.  After high school, Jim graduated from Georgia Southwestern University and was a founding member and Chaplin of that chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.  He had a successful career in Insurance Claims Management for over 40 years.  Mr. Leamon served in the United States Air Force and The Georgia Air National Guard and retired as a Master Sergeant following 23 years of faithful service to his country.  During his military career, he served in the Vietnam War where he was stationed in Thailand.

Mr. Leamon was a Devoted Husband and a Loving Father and Grandfather. Jim always supported his children’s extra-curricular activities and volunteered in various positions - he coached his daughter’s softball team in the 1970s and his son’s soccer team in the 1980s.  He was also a parent volunteer for the Lassiter High School Marching Band.  Jim and his wife enjoyed years of riding motorcycles and RVing together.  He was a dedicated servant to the church and follower of Jesus Christ.  He always tried to bring joy and a smile to those around him.  Mr. Leamon was a member of First Baptist Church Woodstock where he served as Usher, Greeter, Special Events volunteer, Trolley driver, and served on Mission Trips and with the Military Ministry. 

Mr. Leamon was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Gay Murphy Leamon; two daughters, Tamera Michelle Coogler (Philip), and Koren Elizabeth Leamon; one son, Matthew James Leamon;  grandchildren, Justin Philip Coogler, and Brandon Matthew Coogler (Briana); one sister, Maryanne Ivey (Steve).
