Peggy Hite Himes

WOODSTOCK, GA - Peggy Hite Himes, 88, formerly of Champaign-Urbana, IL, and Tomahawk, WI passed away on June 6, 2023, in Woodstock, GA surrounded by her husband & family.  

Peggy was born March 6, 1935, the daughter of Lawrence and Helen Hite of Mount Vernon, IL.  They both proceed her in death.  She was also proceeded by a great-grandson, Elijah Paul, of Spartanburg, SC.  

Peggy is survived by Donald H. Himes, husband of 64 years, formerly of Champaign-Urbana, IL and currently residing in Woodstock, GA; Judith Couch (sister) of Cincinnati, OH; children: Christopher (Lanna) Himes, Aurora, IL; Cara (Richard) Paul, Mount Pleasant, SC; Whitney (Kurt) Evers, Woodstock, GA; Alicia (Heath) Allison, Aurora, IL; Matthew (Simone) Himes, Woodstock, GA.  Ten grandchildren: ShelbyPaul, Cameron Paul, Harrison Paul, Sophia Paul, Connor Evers, Tyler Allison, Jackson Allison, Ava Allison, Madeleine Himes, and Noah Himes.  four great-grandchildren: Colin Paul, Lucas Paul, Nathaniel Paul and Lyra Paul.

Peggy grew up in Mt. Vernon, IL, graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School, was very popular with her classmates, and was elected student body president.  She attended the University of Illinois where she pledged Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, and later received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University.

Peggy met Donnie on the train enroute to Chicago while attending secretarial school, ultimately marrying on July 11, 1959.  She was a proud and caring mother who always loved having a crowd in the house.  She had the gift of hospitality, enjoyed cooking and entertaining with her kids.  ALL were always welcome.  Everyone looked forward to her Italian Beef that she would prepare for the Illini football game tailgates.  She enjoyed the performances and was a proud supporter of Chief Illiniwek.

Peggy had a passion for politics and loved a good political debate.  She was a foot soldier for children’s causes, fought for the sanctity of life, particularly the unborn.  Her Christian faith,and belief in Jesus Christ as her Savior, was always her guiding light.

A private family service will be held in Woodstock, GA at a later date.
