Sylvanis Butterworth

Sylvanis Butterworth, a cherished patriarch, devout Christian, and veteran, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 3, 2026, in Acworth, Georgia. Born on August 26, 1927, in Cartersville, Georgia, Sylvanis lived a full and impactful 98 years. Known for his loving and passionate spirit, he leaves behind a legacy of integrity and joy that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Sylvanis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer, where he was stationed at the strategic Panama Canal.

After his honorable discharge, Sylvanis returned to Georgia, where he built a life rich in family and community ties.

Sylvanis was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lydia Abernathy Butterworth, his wife, Gladys Chumley Butterworth, sister, Elsie Tyson, and sister-in-law, Barbara Butterworth.

He is survived by his devoted daughter, Peggy Travis (David), and his son, Wayne Butterworth (Susan), who will forever cherish the memories and wisdom he imparted. Sylvanis was a beloved brother to Doris Nicholson, Anne Dunn (David), and Ronald Butterworth. His brother-in-law, Gene Tyson, along with his five grandchildren, Jennifer Maddox (Fred), Tracy Braden, Kristie Waid, Matthew Travis (Zamira), and Joshua Travis (Katherine), and eleven great grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren, will fondly remember his warmth and guidance.

His passion for cars was more than a hobby; it was part of his identity. He especially treasured his 1939 and 1940 Fords. Sylvanis lived his entire life in Cherokee and Bartow County.

Sylvanis Butterworth’s life was characterized by a deep love for his family and friends. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. Sylvanis’s story is one of a well-lived life, marked by the joy he brought to others. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother, grandfather, and friend, whose passion knew no bounds.
